The castle of Karneid stands perched dramatically on a steep rock face overlooking the historic Tyrolean town of Bozen, capitol of the autonomous province of South Tyrol in northern Italy. Nobody knows exactly when the castle was built but its foundations stem from the early 13th century and probably stand on the ruins of an earlier watchtower.

The most prominent owners of Karneid were the Counts of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn who occupied it from 1386 until they sold it to the city of Bozen in 1766. After lying more or less abandoned for more than a century the castle was restored in 1884 by the Bavarian artisan & entrepreneur Ferdinand von Miller. Today the castle is owned by his descendants and remains one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in South Tyrol, playing an important role in the life of the local community. In summer parts of the building are also open to visitors and paying residential guests
